Governor Bush proclaimed the month of May as Just Read, Families! month and today launched a new website which provides information for parents so that they can take an active role in reading with their children this summer. The Just Read, Families! website, www.justreadfamilies.org, offers parents the tools they need to nurture a reading-friendly environment at home. Resources include a calendar of daily reading activities, links to local libraries, and articles on developing children's reading skills. Parents are also offered the option of visiting their child's school website to check for summer reading lists. If your school has a summer reading list, I encourage you to post this on your website. Research shows that children who do not continue reading through the summer can lose a month or more of progress they made in school the past year. Please promote this initiative by encouraging parents to participate as we move towards our goal to have all students in Florida reading at or above grade level by 2012. |
