The workshop will expand your knowledge of how the arts can be applied to adaptive strategies and universal design to enhance your students’ academic learning and success.

The workshop provides experiences in: Inclusion, Universal Design, Assistive Technology, and Adaptive Techniques.
(This is a participatory workshop, please be sure to wear comfortable clothes)

Participants are eligible door prizes and breakfast/lunch will be provided. A tour of the Creative Children Therapy/ A.R.T. Exhibition will be available during the workshop.

The speakers include: Michael Alessandri, Ph.D., Director, Center for Autism Related Disorders (CARD), University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL; Jeffrey P. Brosco, M.D., Ph.D.,  Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the UM School of Medicine and Director of Clinical Services at the UM Mailman Center for Child Development; Monica Dowling, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology, UM Mailman Center for Child Development and Ven Sequenzia, President, Autism Society of FL and Member, Governor’s Task Force on Autism.  The speakers’ presentations will speak to: 1) The issues relevant to the early screening and assessment of ASD and provide strategies and tools for effective and reliable assessment; 2) The key issues/challenges faced when trying to conduct reliable early screening and assessment of ASD; 3) The  fundamental social-communication deficits associated with autism spectrum disorders and their importance in intervention and 4) The guidelines for choosing treatments, along with a discussion of broad “best practice” parameters and specific autism interventions.

CEUs and Master Plan Points will be offered. Non-refundable registration fee is $50.00 for professionals and $25.00 for students. Through the
Yes I Can! Awards, students with disabilities -- some for the first time in their lives -- are recognized for their accomplishments. The Yes I Can! Awards honor students with disabilities who have excelled in one of nine categories:
• Arts
• Academics
• Athletics

• Community Service
• Employment
• Extracurricular Activities

• Independant Living Skills
• Self Advocacy
• Technology

Each Yes I Can! winner has a special moment in the spotlight as he or she is presented with a statue and the audience learns of the student’s accomplishments at the Yes I Can! Awards Ceremony, held at CEC’s Annual Convention & Expo. The winners and their families are also treated to a special field trip. Plus, each student who is nominated receives a Certificate of Accomplishment.

Nominate a student(s) who deserves recognition for his or her achievements.

Special Education Law and Advocacy Training

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council is proud to sponsor the one-day Wrightslaw Special Education Law and Advocacy Training presented by Peter Wright, Esq.

The workshop is designed to inform parents, families or guardians of their children’s educational rights under the law and how to advocate on behalf of their children. Subjects covered will include:

  • Special education law, rights and responsibilities
  • Tests and measurements to measure progress & regression
  • SMART IEPs
  • Introduction to tactics & strategies for effective advocacy

Participants will receive a copy of Wrightslaw: Special Education Law and From Emotions to Advocacy: The Special Education Survival Guide.

Wrightslaw's Keynote Speaker Peter Wright , Esq. is an experienced and well-respected attorney whose law practice is devoted to assisting children with disabilities and their parents, families or guardians. He argued and won a landmark special education case before the U. S. Supreme Court.

Pete and Pam Wright are the authors of Special Education Law , From Emotions to Advocacy: The Special Education Survival Guide, and co-authors of Wrightslaw: No Child Left Behind
