Another valuable resource is the MDCPS Communication Center.

The National Forestry & Wildlife Division offers a great benefit you may or may not know about. It is a free lifetime access pass for any person with a disability or for the caregivers of a person with a disability. It allows access to ALL national parks for free.

All that is required is a letter from the physician stating the disability and you take it to your local National Forestry & Wildlife Division to get the pass. The Parent Training and Information Center for Central & Northeast Florida is excited to announce a new online message board and chat room on their website at www.CFLparents.org

Parents can meet and talk with other parents of children with disabilities!

Visit the new chat room every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month for informal online chats about various subjects related to the IEP process.  Also, visit on the 3rd Wednesday of each month as they host guest speakers who will answer questions on various topics.

Annual Parent Survey Coming in May – The Florida Department of Education (F-DOE) Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services is conducting a parent survey as part of the Florida Department of Education’s activities related to the State Performance Plan (Indicator 8--Parent Involvement).  Attached is a flyer announcing the exceptional student education (ESE) Annual Parent Survey, which may be downloaded and copied to send to schools and parents of children with disabilities.

Special Education Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program

You are eligible if you borrowed money after October 1, 1998 (qualifying federal loans for teacher loan forgiveness now include Perkins Loans, Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), and Direct Loans) and you taught special education in a low-income school for five consecutive years. Highly qualified math, science, and special education teachers are eligible for up to $17,500. Teachers who are highly qualified but do not teach math, science or special education are eligible for up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness.

An Assistive Technology Training is available to any interested employees by Denise Marshall, Division of Blind Services Trainer.

The training is FREE on a variety of adaptive technologies for students who are blind or visually impaired.
