The role of the educational sign language interpreter is to facilitate communication between a person who is deaf and deaf students and others including teachers, parents other school staff and students in educational environments. Educational interpreters are responsible for providing an interpreted message in a language (i.e., American Sign Language) or mode (interpretation/transliteration) that is understandable to the student who is deaf or hard-of-hearing Other English sign forms as well as American Sign Language exist and are used by deaf and hard-of-hearing students. In addition to, interpreting the spoken word or sign, the nuances of spoken English, including the metalinguistic information which accompanies a message as indicated through the speaker’s tone of voice or affect, are a part of the message.
